Fiscal Priorities in Sacramento at the Heart of California’s Problems

SANTA MONICA, CA- In response to the Governor’s State of the State address today, Torie Osborn (50th AD Candidate) released the following statement:

“I am grateful that California has a no-nonsense leader like Governor Brown, and I applaud his statesmanship and willingness to build coalitions in Sacramento, in order to get our state back to fiscal solvency. He is leading California through probably the most difficult fiscal challenge since the 1930s,” said Osborn (D, Santa Monica). “Unfortunately though, while the Governor has proposed to put some increased revenue solutions on the ballot, they fall far short of being meaningful reforms. The burgeoning inequality of the tax system that has grown over the past decade must be turned around, and some sanity and humanity brought back to our priorities. This is a line in the sand moment where we have to say, ‘No more balancing the budget on the backs of children and schools and the poor, while tax loopholes for huge corporations that are outsourcing jobs drain the general fund.’ Year after year, the Legislature promises meaningful reforms, but unfortunately, it’s still just talk. Californians deserve a government that keeps the real needs of the 99% in mind: public education, decent paying jobs, a place to live, and healthcare. These needs must be met through a prudent revenue stream that reflects today’s global economy. Holding our schools hostage and just tinkering around the edges of reform is like giving chewing gum to the starving.”

Osborn is acclaimed for her pioneering leadership as an executive at several nonprofit organizations, including the Liberty Hill Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center – both of which are located in the new 50th Assembly District – as well as United Way of Greater LA. Osborn also served as a senior policy advisor on homelessness, poverty and economic development to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. She is currently a senior strategist for California Calls, a network of 25 organizations throughout the state committed to commonsense governance reform.
