Preeminent Statewide Women’s Group Backs Osborn Citing Her Background as an “Iconic Leader of Movements for Change”

SANTA MONICA, CA – Activist and veteran nonprofit executive Torie Osborn continued her surge of momentum with an impressive endorsement from the California branch of the National Organization for Women (NOW).

“Torie Osborn is a born activist, who, over the course of her professional career, has blossomed into an iconic leader of movements for change, which have fundamentally transformed communities throughout California and beyond,” said Patricia Bellasalma, President of CA NOW. “She’s been a pioneer and an architect of historic work involving women’s rights, social justice, LGBT rights. Because we find ourselves at a critical time in our state where budget cuts have disproportionally affected California’s women and their families, we need leaders who aren’t afraid to think big in order to move our state forward. That is why California NOW is proud to strongly endorse Torie Osborn for State Assembly.”

“Having the support of the California National Organization for Women (NOW) is especially meaningful to me,” said Osborn. “Advancing women’s equality has been central to my life since I founded my college’s first feminist organization. In 1982, I ran the California NOW Northern CA office during the waning days of the ERA drive; that work taught me important lessons: to take the long view, to understand defeat as a teacher, and never to underestimate those forces arrayed against equality. I’m tremendously proud to have California NOW’s endorsement and their affirmation of my lifelong fight for equality.”

Last week, Osborn secured a powerful endorsement from the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Southern California Council.

Additionally, in recent weeks, she’s racked up several consecutive endorsements, including: HONOR PAC, the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley (DP/SFV), the Malibu Democratic Club, Santa Monica Democratic Club, Stonewall and Young Stonewall Democratic Clubs, Beverly Hills-West Hollywood Democratic Club, Valley Grassroots Democratic Club, and the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Osborn is acclaimed for her pioneering leadership as an executive at several nonprofit organizations, including the Liberty Hill Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center – both of which are located in the new 50th Assembly District – as well as United Way of Greater LA. Osborn also served as a senior policy advisor on homelessness, poverty and economic development to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. She is currently a senior strategist for California Calls, a network of 25 organizations throughout the state committed to commonsense governance reform.
