First-Time Candidate Wins Big Victory Over Sitting Pols
SANTA MONICA, CA – Adding to an impressive list of endorsements from local Democratic clubs, activist and veteran nonprofit executive Torie Osborn last night won the backing of the Santa Monica Democratic Club by a resounding margin, fueling the grassroots momentum in her race for the 50th Assembly District.
Osborn, a Santa Monica resident, won the endorsement with a remarkable 77% of the vote, besting South Bay Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, who received 13%, and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom, who pulled in 9% of the vote.
“I am overjoyed, deeply honored, and sincerely grateful for the support of the influential Santa Monica Democratic Club,” Osborn said. “Their support will send a powerful message to progressive Democrats and residents all across Santa Monica that they believe I am the best choice to represent them in the legislature, and that I’ll work hard everyday to bring fiscal solvency, common sense, and bold leadership to Sacramento.”
Osborn said she was particularly heartened to win the support of her hometown club. Santa Monica, which comprises 22% of likely voters of the newly drawn 50th district, will be a major battleground in this year’s elections.
The coveted endorsement followed a candidate’s forum hosted by the Santa Monica Democratic Club. During the forum, Osborn called for fiscal reform and a renewed commitment to public education, health care, job creation, and environmental protection. She stressed her background as a non-profit executive, a community organizer, and an educator, saying her background prepared her to “tackle the tough stuff” and “forge lasting progressive change.”
In recent weeks, Osborn has scored several consecutive endorsements, including: HONOR PAC, the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley (DP/SFV), the Malibu Democratic Club and the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Osborn also served as a senior policy advisor on homelessness, poverty and economic development to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. She is currently a senior strategist for California Calls, a network of 25 organizations throughout the state committed to commonsense governance reform.
