Major Valley Grassroots Dem Coalition Sides With Activist Torie Osborn Over Sitting Assemblymember Butler
SANTA MONICA, CA – Building off of her recent endorsements from the Malibu Democratic Club and Malibu City Councilman Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner, today Torie Osborn continued to gain momentum, shake things up, and turn heads in the race for the new 50th Assembly District seat, by announcing the endorsement of the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley (DP/SFV), a powerhouse umbrella group representing 27 Democratic clubs.
“On behalf of the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley (DP/SFV), we are pleased to endorse Torie Osborn for the new 50th Assembly District seat,” said Agi Kessler, Chair of DP/SFV. “She won with a clear and strong majority of support from our members, and we plan to do everything we can to get her elected to the Assembly.”
The Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley (DP/SFV) is the coordinating body for a coalition of twenty-seven Democratic Clubs. They are located in the Assembly Districts, which are wholly, or partially in the San Fernando Valley, and include the city of Agoura Hills, a key community in the new 50th Assembly District.
“We need more leaders who are community activists and grassroots organizers in our legislature,” said Thomas Patrick O’Shaughnessy, Endorsements Co-Chair, DP/SFV. “Torie Osborn represents the idealism, progressivism, and deep-rooted yet balanced pragmatism that so many of us active in the Democratic Party desire to see in our leaders in the Capitol. I plan to fight hard to make sure she wins this race.”
Prior to last night’s DP/SFV meeting, Osborn earned the recommendation of the DP/SFV endorsement committee with a 75% vote of the committee, and last night the full DP/SFV board voted to ratify her endorsement with 63% of the vote.
“I am deeply grateful for the overwhelming and strong support that I received from DP/SFV and its membership,” said Osborn. “I believe that California is in a crisis. I’ve spent my life helping communities work through crises to forge opportunity. My tools that I will bring to Sacramento are a lifetime of speaking truth to power, forging coalitions and persuading people who don’t agree.”
Additionally, according to DP/SFV bylaws, it is impossible for a campaign to “stack” the club with additional members before an endorsement vote: except for a small number of ex officio votes, the voting roster is limited to representatives from a fixed number of chartered clubs, as well as at-large members who were elected in February of 2011.
The new 50th Assembly District includes the communities of Agoura Hills, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Malibu, West Hollywood, Topanga, Pacific Palisades, and other parts of West Los Angeles.
The Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley (DP/SFV) is the third Democratic Party group to endorse in the race, following the Malibu Democratic Club and the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains—all of which have endorsed Osborn.

She is currently a senior strategist for California Calls, a network of 25 organizations throughout the state committed to commonsense governance reform.
