Major Statewide Teachers Group Backs Osborn
SANTA MONICA, CA- With an unusually strong and early endorsement, today the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) threw their support behind veteran non-profit leader Torie Osborn in her bid to fill California’s new vacant 50th Assembly seat, continuing to power Osborn’s growing momentum.
“Teachers have been under attack for too long, and California’s education system is in deep crisis. We need fighters in Sacramento who will help turn it around,” said Josh Pechthalt, President of the California Federation of Teachers (CFT). “Its time that we stand up for our members by electing those with coalition-building and advocacy skills who have proven to us that they’ll fight for more teachers, smaller classrooms, and better schools and colleges. We know that Torie will bring a fresh approach and new ideas to the tarnished Capitol. That’s why we’re proud to strongly endorse Torie Osborn for Assembly. She’ll put forward innovative ideas on how to deal with our state’s budget, and she’ll work to find ways to fully fund our schools and colleges so that we can ensure that students can once again get the best education possible in California.”
“I am deeply grateful for this important endorsement by the California Federation of Teachers,” said Osborn. “Teachers are at the forefront of asking us to fundamentally rethink our state’s priorities, and how those priorities are influencing state decisions. Sacramento’s top priority should be creating jobs that stimulate our economy, and getting people back to work. Education is a basic and integral part of making that happen, and instead, we are failing our students. It is absolutely unacceptable that only 56% of our high school students graduate in four years. Its time California gets serious about investing in our schools and colleges, fixing our campuses, shrinking our class sizes, and investing in teachers salaries so that we can attract more teachers.”
The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) is the statewide affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers. The CFT represents faculty and other school employees in public and private schools and colleges, from early childhood through higher education.
Just last week Osborn announced the support of over 75 respected women across many important women’s issues, and the previous week she released a list of over 500 grassroots activists and supporters backing her campaign.
